This video was made as part of a Takuan Kit fundraising event to support Yu-Ai Kai's programs and Japantown Prepared!'s community safety action awareness program.

Nina F. Ichikawa,Executive Director of the Berkeley Food Institute will share her article “Community Cookbooks: Asian American Food Selfies” along with Yu-Ai Kai volunteers sharing their favorite family recipes. In this segment Margaret Tomita dishes up her family’s Chinese Chicken Salad recipe with help from granddaughter Tabitha.

This segment features Jane Kawasaki making her family’s Horensho Shira-ae (Spinach with White Tofu Dressing) recipe.

In this segment Kathy Higuchi shares her family’s recipe for Sweet and Sour Chicken Wings.

In this segment LaDonna Yumori-Kaku shares a Layered Rice recipe from her Yumori family cookbook.

Presented by YU-AI KAI Lecture Series and the Japanese American Museum San Jose (JAMsj) this virtual event featured Nina F. Ichikawa, Executive Director of the Berkeley Food Institute sharing her article “Community Cookbooks: Asian American Food Selfies” as well as Yu-Ai Kai volunteers dishing up their favorite family recipes.

The Yu-Ai Kai Lecture/Luncheon Series set the table for Mystery Author NAOMI HIRAHARA’s Presentation of her Award Winning Books and relevant Asian American literature. Naomi’s insights to her family history, writing style, future works, and autographing books entertained her fans. A light lunch featured a creative MURDERED Cheese Ball to round out the event.

The Yu-Ai Kai Lecture Series presents Hanayagi Reimichi-Reiko Iwanaga, San Jose dance instructor of the largest Obon Odori in America. Her father in law Rev. Yoshio Iwanaga first brought Obon Odori to the U.S. in 1930.

Bowman Ching and Tom Izu of Yu Ai Kai’s Sansei Lecture Series explain the history and current state of HANAFUDA, the Japanese “flower cards” used in many card games.

The Yu-Ai Kai Lecture Series presents – Instant Pot Japanese Cooking, “Bachan’s Favorites in half the time.” This workshop featured the “Two Instant Pot Ladies” Margaret Tomita and Diane Iwamura demonstrating traditional Japanese receipts using the fast time saving Instant Pot.

A highlight of Yu Ai Kai’s Lecture Series was a hands-on cooking experience sharing favorite Oshogatsu (Japanese New Year’s) recipes and techniques for making them. December 9, 2018 at the Akiyama Wellness Center

For over 100 years the KITAZAWA SEED COMPANY has been the Bay Area source for Japanese and Asian seeds. Starting in San Jose in 1917, Gijiu Kitazawa began by selling Japanese vegetable seeds to Japanese American farmers.
